[La Pucelle Ragnarok Menu Translation]

Thank you to NeoArkadia for assistance with the store survey questions, as well as with clarification for some options.

Okay so, as partial reference for me, but also as assistance for anyone who might come across this, I give you: A menu translation guide for La Pucelle: Ragnarok!

This is the Playstation Portable version of La Pucelle Tactics for the Playstation 2-- disappointingly, only released in Japan thus far. Ragnarok greatly improves upon Tactics in numerous ways, not only adding an extra story mode focusing on Demon Lord Prier, but also giving the options to disable battle and system effects, an extra turn feature when you do purifications, but also having New Game+, which the American version of La Pucelle lacked, and was only in later releases of the game in Japan and Europe. Overall, if you're willing to delve through the menus, it has enough features to make it a more enjoyable experience.

First, the options screen.

Control Style is, basically, what direction your cursor moves in. There's A and B styles, and generally, A (the default one) is what you'd go with.

BGM, Voice, Battle, and Sound Effect volume is self-explanatory. The game gives off sounds for each notch you move on the options, appropriate to what it affects, so it's easy to figure out what affects what.

Ally Battle Animation and Enemy Battle Animation-- basically, it decides on whether or not the battle sequences occur. If you have Ally Battle Animation on but Enemy Battle Animation Off, any battles you initiate will have all the bells and whistles, while enemy attacks will just have a simple effect on the field. Having these options off will greatly increase the speed in which the game goes by, and is preferable for grinding.

System Speed is the speed in which things like purifications happen. There are only two options with this: Normal, and Fast. The one shown in this picture is Normal, the default option, while pressing the left or right directional button will change it to Fast. Again, great for grinding.

Movement and Text speed affects how fast your characters move on the field, and also how fast text appears. There's three options for this. The one shown in the picture is the default, normal speed. Pressing left on the D-Pad will change it to Slow, while pressing right will change it to Fast.

The Out of Battle Menu

Items sends you to your item bag. Items are a bit confusing in this game without knowing what they say, but you can generally tell how strong weapons and armor are, and what they do, while also knowing the most important item: Change-Ups. On the field, you can select an item in battle, and if it results in an arrow you can change the direction of using the Square button, you've found your Change-Up! These items are a necessity for purifications.

Equips sends you to the equipment screen, letting you change what's attached to your characters. Stats are all in English, and you can generally tell if something is stronger or not: blue numbers when changing an equip means your stats will go up, while red numbers means they'll go down. You'll also see colored squares saying a specific stat, when it comes to equips; that means those stats will gain experience and level up, giving you bonuses. Some equips will give you special skills, though those tend to be regulated to Magic Staffs.

Status sends you to the Status Screen. Check out those levels and numbers!

Training is one of the more unique features of La Pucelle. You can purify monsters to be on your team, and as a result, you can train monsters to affect their stats when they level up. You can spoil the monsters, which won't affect their stats, but will make them like you more, up to rank 10. At rank 9, monsters gain the ability to purify in battle. On the other hand, if stats are highlighted when you select an option, it means you can be tough on them to lower their liking of you, but boost how their stats develop. You have to balance spoiling and tough love to make good monsters!

Extra:

There is a special training phrase that will allow you to change the name of your monsters! If you press Square on the page enough times, you will get to roman letters, so you can rename them to English to make it easier to differentiate. This will also make your monsters like you a bit more.

Character order is fairly straight-forward.

Manual lets you organize your characters yourself through use of the O button. The character images at the bottom of the screen change position depending on what order you put them in, making it easier to figure out who is who.

Level organizes characters by level. Human puts human characters first before monsters. Monsters puts monster characters first before humans. Hit Points puts your characters with the highest HP first. Attack strength puts the characters with the highest ATK stat first, while Magic Strength puts the characters with the highest INT first.

Options is self-explanatory.

Quit Game (or, as it is literally pronounced, "Give Up") is as is said-- you quit the game. The game does not auto-save without confirmation from you, which is why right below it, there is...

The Save Game option! This uses your PSP's memory stick to save the game. O to confirm, X to cancel. Simple stuff! Make sure to save often!

The character select menu!

Pretty simple: Just press O when your cursor is over the Base (blue glowing square), and select one of the names on the menu. You'll have your character! You can press X to also return them to the base after taking them out, and in general undo a lot of things concerning that character, as long as they have initiated a battle command, a purification command, or an item command.

The battle menu!

Move lets you move your character around. Blue squares that appear are how far you can move your character.

Attack does your basic attack. Characters right next to you will join in with the attack.

Special Attack does skills you can pick from a list. General rule of thumbs is that if you can't select yourself as a target, you're supposed to be aiming for the enemy. A good suggestion is to use the first stage of the game to try out skills, and make a list of what is what!

Purify is the other unique aspect of La Pucelle-- the Geo Symbols before Geo Symbols, Netherworld Gates (or Dark World Gates in the American translation), will spawn monsters if they're not taken care of. So you need to purify them! Directing the flow of Netherworld Gates to make a circle around enemies will cause a Miracle, or an ultimate attack, once it gets over fifteen squares. Merging gate flows will also cause different effects, ranging from a Holy element, or a Lightning element, or to a Healing element (which will also purify any monsters it comes into contact with). Your purification range increases the more you level up your INT stat, and you can target monsters with it, too. Purify a monster enough times, and they'll join your team once they're defeated.

Items lets you select items. First option will be to use an item like normal. Second lets you mess with equips. Third lets you throw away items permanently.

Status lets you see the status screen.

Direction facing is, essentially, the menu option for just holding down the Square button over a character. It lets you change the direction a character is facing. Attacks from the front will cause less damage than attacks from behind, and direction facing is necessary for purification chains.

Undo is the menu version of the X button. It undoes everything you did in that turn, as long as, as said before, you didn't do any attacks/purifications/item uses. To note, though, if you get an extra turn as a result of a successful purification, pressing Undo will only send your character back to where they were after the purification.

The Turn Menu.

Turn Number counts the number of turns that have gone by. Keep track of them, since if too many turns pass, the Netherworld Gates start to overflow.

Battle Start starts battles. When you only select normal attacks, you have to confirm with the Turn Menu to have them go off. Skills, Purification, and Item use will immediately go off once selected.

End Turn is the same as Battle Start-- only thing is, your turn will end afterwards. Make sure you've done everything you need to do!

Options and Quit Game are self-explanatory.

Outside of battle, we have the RosenQueen store!

You can purchase items, using your money to do so. Or you can sell items in order to gain money, and free up space in your inventory.

However, there is also a survey option, once you make at least one purchase, each time you visit the shop.

The first option will make more weapons, like Fists, Hammers, and Staves, appear in the store.

The second option will make more defensive items like shields and armor appear in the store.

The third option will make odder items like stat EXP multiplication items appear. These items will generally give a better boost when leveling up specific stats.

The fourth option keeps things as they are right now, when it comes to the amount of items in the store.

After you pick an option, you get to choose how expensive the items are. Make sure to not go for expensive all the time, since you will only get so much money after battles!

Sometimes, after completing the specific item surveys, you will get extra surveys that affect battles.

This is the bonus survey. Randomly appearing, this will either give you triple EXP gained for defeating monsters, triple item EXP from purification, triple money gained from the next map, or triple stat boosts from training. All in all, extremely useful!

There is also an option to make enemies stronger, which sometimes appears. While very important when it comes to level grinding, make sure you'll be able to handle the enemies before you commit to it. If you're trying to get stronger enemies, I recommend you save before going at the store, just in case they're too much for you.

This makes more special items appear in the store. I'm a bit unsure on this one...

Finally, the Netherworld Store.

While not exactly a store, this has the important function of being able to fuse items. The only catch is, you need to send in monsters with the items equipped to them, permanently removing them from your party. Stronger, happier monsters will send you items back, but generally, most of mine just get lost into the abyss.

The first option lets you send the monsters. When you have items equipped, the item in the first slot will be what type of item you have as a result-- when selecting monsters, the right side of the screen will give you a preview of the item you'll get back as a result, so you can make sure the numbers add up.

The second option lets you know how your monsters are doing. This is a bit hard in Japanese to figure out.

The last two options are essentially just text tutorials explaining sending monsters and training them.

While there's definitely more things to the game than just these menus, this at least should help anyone as a guide, to know what it is they're doing! I hope that one day, this helps someone!
